Programs » Rain Barrel Initiative
To reduce the amount of water rushing into Nine Mile Run during a rainstorm, it is important to keep as much rainwater as possible on your lot. By doing so, you prevent the rain from flowing over hard surfaces such as roads and driveways, picking up pollutants, and flooding and eroding Nine Mile Run. The water can slowly soak through the soil and into the water table, being cleansed by soils and plants along the way.
The Rain Barrel Initiative currently features three different rain barrels.
The NMRWA rain barrel is our own locally produced barrel. The barrel holds an impressive 133 gallons of stormwater and with its removable lid, the barrel is easy to install and maintain.
The RiverSafe rain barrel is our second largest rain barrel rain barrel. This barrel holds 132 gallons of stormwater and with its closed design and passive overflow system, it is best suited for urban areas and houses with limited permeable space.
The Moby rain barrel is the smallest of the three barrels. This barrel holds 65 gallons of stormwater, has a removable lid, and features two overflow ports. It is ideal for smaller roofs.
Please call 412.371.8779 ext. 120 or email luke@ninemilerun.org with any questions about Rain Barrels.
