NMRWA is so excited about the amazing transformation of the vacant lot next to Wilkinsburg High School. This project engaged the students in Wilkinsburg High School's Key Club in creating a unique green space that includes a rain garden, tree plantings, outdoor classroom and seating area, including green infrastructure that addresses stormwater runoff from the adjacent parking lot.
NMRWA directed the students throughout this project incorporating a series of design charrettes and presentations, and then the planning for construction days.
For three days in early June, the students and the Nine Mile Run team worked from 7:30am until late afternoon to construct our largest rain garden yet! The group also created peripheral beds and planted 5 large trees.
Stop by Wilkinsburg High School and see the transformation! Check out the KDKA news story (with video) here!
This project was made possible through a grant from the Heinz Endowments Youth Philanthropy Program.
